7 Reasons Your Business Should Be Using Instagram

I-N-S-T-A-G-R-A-M

Every small business should actively be using an Instagram account.  Instagram has been a major player in small business marketing for a few years but as the demographic of the platform continues to skew younger and the growth of the app continues to explode, it's relevancy and importance in the success of any marketing campaign grows as well.  Instagram is one of the easiest social platforms to use and produces the highest rate of engagement.  All things equal, if I could represent my small business on only one social media platform, it would be Instagram.

7 Reasons Your Business Should Be Using Instagram

1.  One Billion Strong and Growing

Instagram currently has over 1 billion monthly users and over half of them log-in to the platform on a daily basis.  Half a billion active daily users.  That's a lot of potential reach.  The good news for you is that most businesses have been very slow to take advantage of all that Instagram has to offer so if you get on board now, you'll have an advantage.  A recent survey by eMarketer found that only 23% of US brands have an Instagram account.  This number is expected to double over the next few years and early adapters can ride the wave while newbies fight for crumbs.

2.  Instagram is linked to Facebook

Facebook continues to be a giant in social media marketing and Instagram is owned by Facebook.  If you have an active Instagram account for your business that you link to its Facebook account, it makes sharing content across both platforms, advertising and cross-promoting pretty easy.  Because costs are shared between two of the most popular social platforms in the world, a business that is already spending money on social media marketing or plans to in the future can drive up revenue while driving down costs and reaching more people.

3.  Simple to Use / Higher Engagement

Compared to other social platforms, especially Facebook, the Instagram app is really easy to use.  Ease-of-use is one of the reasons that content posted on Instagram gets more engagement than on Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat.  Some research has shown that it's as high as 20X greater than other platforms.

4.  Instagram Trends Younger

While Facebook is still the dominant, and growing, social media platform, one group that it has not fared well with recently are those under thirty-five years of age.  For the last couple of years Facebook has continued to lose users in this group by the millions.  Instagram on the other hand is the fastest growing and most popular social app to people under thirty-five.  It also seems the younger the user, the more likely they are to use Instagram over other platforms.  In fact, 72% of U.S. teens use Instagram; making it the top platform for teenagers (Piper Jaffray).   As Facebook continues to trend to an older crowd, Instagram creates an opportunity to reach an entirely different, new audience.

5.  Your Cell Phone is Probably Good Enough

Because Instagram is a photo based app, content is heavily dependent on good quality photos.  Fortunately, if you can't afford a professional photographer, you can still run a successful IG page.  These days, most smart phones have a good enough camera to get the job done and there are a variety of gadgets you can get to boost its quality .  The power to run a successful account literally fits in your hand.

6.  Hashtags Increase Visibility

Instagram loves hashtags!  Hashtags allow people to search content within the app to find exactly what they're looking for.  Because I run the Northern California Outdoors & Entertainment website www.norcalpulse.com - and am constantly searching for new people, places and things, I often search hashtags like, #northerncalifornia #northcoast #lassen #humboldtredwoods #laketahoe and others which allow me to find incredible content and connect with people with similar interests.

Hashtags work similarly for businesses on Instagram and they work well.  It takes a solid strategy and some time but Instagram provides a real opportunity that other platforms don't.  When you post a photo and add the appropriate, relevant hashtags to that post, when people search those hashtags, they find you.

7.  Track Competitors, Industry Movers

Because of the simplicity of Instagram, it's easy to watch your competition.  It's also a great way to watch industry movers and pick up tips about what they're doing well and how you can apply that to your business. It's a highly cost-effective way to track industry trends by watching others and using hashtags to search relevant topics.
